It was a very hot day, so we were very grateful for the Wheldon Building and it’s air conditioning/breezy windows! (and of course the space!)
People started drifting in from 11am. We had sign ups for both the league session and our Mario Kart World tournament. The latter had an option to tick to say whether you owned the game or not (but not everyone read it properly!)
We started league at the earlier time of 11.30, first up was of course Mario Party Jamboree, but DK’s Konga line was the surprise element. It gave a little hint of what to expect of round 2.
It was 4 player and we managed a few groups of 4 and a couple of groups of 3.
Dylan or Jen filled in the gap when there were only 3 players, but it was almost impossible to score zero, we just had to make sure we came in last position each time.
Meanwhile, anyone not playing the main feature, set up a handheld game up Mario Kart in the back of the room.
In between things, we saw Indie game “Bread & Fred” being played by Rhys and John.
When Dylan returned from nipping out, we got the Mario Kart World tournament started.
He split the groups up to those who owned the game and those who didn’t. It transpired at that point, that not everyone had read the sign up sheet properly! Which was handy because we ended up with 8 with the game and 8 without!
On the right screen, the groups of 4 who owned the game played the Cherry Rally knockout tour.
The first group featured some of our most established members!
No one actually got to first place on this one, then in Glyn’s group, Glyn ended up being the last one standing, but quite after the 4th place cut off the first time, and then came 3rd overall in the second one.
Meanwhile, in the other room, were the two groups of 4 who didn’t own the game. They were asked to play a Grand Prix for each round.
The final, the top 2 from each side came together, and played a team set of 4 races. The ones who owned the game were on their own with CPUs, and the two who didn’t own the game were on the same team. The ones who didn’t own the game got to choose the races, and Em started by choosing Rainbow Road!
Glyn took the overall victory and bagged himself £15 of eShop credit!
But we can’t leave without sharing this fabulous finish by Ffreuer during the initial rounds!
Then it was time for Round 2 of the league! No one was expecting the Donkey Konga Bongos to come out! Dylan set up the old Wii, and the two drums, and off we went!
There was a lot of laughter, 99 red balloons, tubthumping, and a couple of other classics heard. Most of the pairings were quite close and it came to the “spamming the beat” bonus points at the end…
There ended up being a 4-way tie breaker, where Cat, Em, Glyn and John competed with ” Spread ‘n butter” from Mario Party Jamboree. Glyn and John both got perfects, so we had to go again with “Stone-eye-bowling” to find out who this session’s winner was. It was Glyn again, so he won the red dice this time!
We finished the day with some 8 player Smash!
Then of course concluded with the usual group photo. (Thanks to Liesel for taking it this time)
It was also nice that most of the group joined us in Clio Lounge for some tea after. We had a table of 18!
