We were running slightly late this time, so turned up to the venue at just before 11! It didn’t take us long to get set up though, and most people drifted in gradually after 11.
We didn’t see much Mario Kart today, a few muttered that they were too tired of Mario Kart, so it’s just as well we’d planned different content for this event!
We were missing a few regulars this month, but we had a peak of 19 attending throughout the day (no kids this time though!)
We got started with this year’s league, the theme this year is “Party” so we kicked it off with Mario Party Jamboree!
Round 1 consisted of 3 mini games: Hot Cross Blocks, Hot Hot Hop & Stamp Out.
There were a couple of funny moments in the first game, when all 4 players kept picking the same block, so didn’t progress for a few cycles!
People were chatting about having a strategy for “Stamp Out”, but nothing really became apparent during actual play, apart from maybe when red took to a corner. The CPU was set to easy where there was a group of three, so that was just ridiculous to watch!
After round 1 concluded, there were 3 people who could end up in a tie breaker if they won their groups in the 2nd round.
Before the main tournament kicked off, some of us went to grab some lunch from town.
Back in the venue, we kicked off our main Tournament on Smash Ultimate. Those who knew it was Smash were asking questions about the set up, but there’s a reason we rarely feature Smash in our events. (See 2015’s league for the history) Last featured properly in February 2020, most of the selectable names were people who were members before lockdown. Some current members’ names were still there though, and newer members just went with random names from older members.
We only got a couple of general shots of Smash, it happened quite quickly, but it was unlimited stock, 5 minute time limit. Stage changes every minute, and selected “Mario” themed items. Single elimination/top 2 go through.
Becky took the final victory, and won themselves £15 of eShop credit!
In the next gap, Glyn got our his version of Tomodachi Life (3DS) and swapped a few characters with Jen on her version.
Round 2 of the league we stuck to Mario Party this time, but it diverges from next month 😉
Mario Party Superstars came out, and it was 3 mini games again: Face Lift, Pushy Penguins & Bowser’s Big Blast.
There were some proper close scores on the Face Lift round, Pushy Penguins got quite a laugh, and Bowser’s Big Blast – the CPU won a couple of the rounds! By the end of this bit of the league, people kept making innuendos, though we honestly chose those games completely innocently!
Drn won the victory for the first league session, being the only person with the full 10 points. He got the first custom die, (The pale pink one for February!) and the fiver.
We finished the event slightly early, and since only a few people bought raffle tickets this time, we reduced the prizes because everyone who entered had already won two prizes!
For those who maybe aren’t aware, the raffles are to raise money so we can fund prizes, refreshments, and even the trophies at the end of the year. Without your support we won’t be able to guarantee any of the above. we’re a not for profit community, and all the money goes back into supporting the group. The price of a ticket is either 50p or £1, we accept cash or paypal on the day.
