January Mini Meet 13/01/24

New year, same NNW, new venue!
Well not that new for us, as we once used the same room in May 2017, but it was new for the younger members!

What was different this time though, was we were able to get the chairs stacked away so it was less like a lecture theatre and more like a dance floor! We had the use of 6 tables and enough chairs to go around.

We like Pontio, because it’s a bit more accessible and it allows more people to find out about us and what we do.
As it was January, and Jen wasn’t quite ready for the pattern of structured events, we decided to do a chilled mini meet. It was the full day, but full of whatever people wanted to play, no raffle and no tournament. (Not even a group photo!)

we started the day off with the favourite of last event:

For a while there was just Drn, then most of the regulars started to emerge.

And at one point we had this:

3 simultaneous Suika Game soundtracks out of sync…! No one did manage to get those two big watermelons though..

We briefly saw Mr Driller Drill Land courtesy of Drn..

After that, Drn and Dylan played a bit of WarioWare as Jen greeted some more people who were arriving.

At about this point, Rhodri had nipped out to get some lunch, and came back with some “pancake cookies”

Four of us played Just Dance (of course we included Rasputin, and the final Countdown involved a lot of jumping about!) No pictures as Jen was dancing rather than watching…

Next up we had a big group together to play Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. It was mostly 150CC, but also saw a battle and some 200CC races.

New kid, Illtud, wanted to challenge our top player to a 1v1 race, so we managed to persuade Glyn to get back in the driving seat. They agreed on one 150CC race, and one 200CC race. What actually happened was Illtud won the race that was Glyn’s usual strongest, and Glyn won the race that was usually Illtud’s strongest. We think that calls for a rematch (hopefully with Em too, next time 😉 )

We were actually running out of time, and had half an hour left, but Jen had promised Kalub we could do a bit more Just Dance “later”. Most wanted to get a game of Smash in, so we set that up… or we tried to set it up. After many minutes of failing to connect certain controllers, people accidentally unselecting characters, and a couple of false starts, Dylan accidentally selected the small “regular” battlefield stage for 7 players… that was just a big on screen mess!

So when they did it again, they made sure to choose the bigger stage!

And as promised, we managed to finish on Just Dance (and another rendition of Ra-Ra-Rasputin!)

It was nice to meet a couple of new families at the event, and good to catch up with some of the regulars.

We hope to see you all again next month.

UPDATE: Coming soon, we intend to make a mailing list, so you can be updated about the blog and upcoming events even if you’re not on social media! Watch this space 🙂
