Splatoon Release Day Event/Colourful Crazy Fun! 29/05/2015

We hired out the usual Cinema Room in Academi for the afternoon, and set up two consoles with Splatoon freeplay.
The main console was available for playing online and the secondary console was just for local play.

People started by trying it out, as a lot hadn't got the game yet.

We ended the evening by going to our usual Hockey Hut in Varsity, but things didn't quite go to plan with some waiting nearly 2 hours for their food, and one person's pizza being burnt. The hungry people were not impressed and ended up having to go somewhere else for food, which put a bit of a downer on the evening, but it made us chuckle at the misfortune of the pub that night :P

Don't worry we'll be back, but a tip for the pizza fans - maybe pop by Domino's on your way down ;)

Mad Mario Kart MEGA Mayhem!! Take #2(00) 16/05/2015

Well this was a turn up for the books, access was perfectly timed and we got let in as soon as we showed up! :D

It didn't take us long to set up, so once we'd got our equipment set up, and saw in some early people, they got started on Kirby and the Rainbow Curse as a freeplay. it was newly released just a week previously and people were loving the music and the graphics. The 2nd 3rd and 4th players were starting to notice that the first player's rainbow rope kept getting in the way though!

More started to turn up, and the more serious guys decided to practice Mario Kart 8 and Smash in the second room, ready for the tournaments and league.

We even had a small corner of Pokemon TCG happening :) It was quite a hit from the last event, so it was nice to see a small recurrence.

We kicked off with the first round of the Smash League at 12, with the themed round on 3DS:
The stage was Rainbow Road, characters were anyone from Mario Kart (including mii costumes) and Mario Kart items only (which were shown on the Wii U version on the big screen so the host was easily able to set up.)
Someone accidentally chose the wrong stage though, so one group had to restart their match. We had three groups of three and one group of four on this occasion.

Round one finished by 12.30, so it was grabbed as an opportunity for some to nip and get some lunch. Maybe overestimated slightly though, as we should've started sooner due to the end of the event overrunning by 20 minutes (sorry guys!)

1pm was the Mario Kart 8 200cc tournament, it was super fast and crazy, there was a lot of shouting, and it was very tight towards the end.
We started off with top two go through for the first two rounds, and then top one only to end up for 4 players for the semi final.

Ben rests his eyes before the next match....

Ben took 4th place and won a Bullet Bill keyring, Dan took 3rd with a Luigi jointed figure, and the top 2 places fought it out at the end.. It was neck and neck all the way, and even led to a tie breaker!
The tie breaker was "Mount Wario" - The Mole was just about on track to grab victory, when it got to the last item box on the last lap. He grabbed a coin, while just a second behind him was Will who grabbed a box of THREE RED SHELLS?! Well, that was it... The Mole was doomed... !!

3rd place play-off

Neck and neck in the final

The Mole grabbed 2nd place of £10 eShop credit and a couple of pull back mario kart figures. Will grabbed 1st place with £20 of eShop credit and the official Mario Kart 8 Guide Book.

Little Sean was all dressed up and seemed to be having a lot of fun too :)

Unfortunately we had forgotten that Mario Kart 8 could take so long(!) so we ended up deciding to run the amiibo tournament simultaneously with the rest of the Smash League Rounds.

The amiibo tournament was 1 v 1, for glory, customs off and single elimination. There were 14 entrants so Jen & Dylan threw theirs in too to make the number nice and neat :)
People wanted to watch their own amiibo fight so we staggered things slightly.

Round 2 of Smash League hurried on - 3DS again, but this was the "For Glory" round, so everyone knew what to do.

Round 3 followed soon after, and this was the Wildcard round: A Special Smash with speed set to fast and in stamina mode. This stressed quite a few people out at the top! :o I think the stamina and speed took everyone by surprise!!

This Smash League Session was the more tense one yet, with a 3-way tie for first place as well as a 3-way tie for 4th place!!
We had a play off for 1st place to see who would win the wario amiibo. After a controller malfunction, Ben managed to grab the amiibo, but of course the tie breaker didn't count towards the league points, so the gap between 1st and 2nd place closed slightly, but Dan still kept his position for this time.

The amiibo tournament finished on a surprise final of Cat's Mario (Itsame) vs Rhys' Diddy Kong (Dunston) - Dunston had won the original amiibo tournament back in December, but to everyone's shock Itsame ran away with the title on this occasion! Cat grabbed herself some Eshop credit for his victory.

We finally ended by presenting the prizes and doing the raffle. The Mole wanted... the monty mole, so when #Johnwinseverything managed to win the mole, the Mole ended up doing a trade off so he take the mole home with himself instead!

We only overran by 20 minutes, but everyone seemed to have a lot of fun, so it was worth it ;)

hopefully see you on Splatoon release day 29th May for some more crazy fun! :D
